Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about outdoor art craftsmanship, hanging, and custom orders.
Craftsmanship
-
Each barn quilt is built on Exterior Sign/Billboard Grade MDO Plywood — a premium material chosen specifically for its durability and resistance to the elements. MDO (Medium Density Overlay) plywood is the same material used for outdoor signage and is designed to hold paint beautifully for years.
-
Every barn quilt is primed three times on all six surfaces — front, back, and all four edges. This thorough preparation seals the wood completely, preventing moisture from entering from any direction and ensuring the paint adheres properly for the long term.
-
All barn quilts are painted with three or more coats of name-brand exterior paint, including the edges. This is the same paint that is used on houses. Using quality exterior paint means the colors stay vibrant and the surface holds up against sun, rain, and temperature changes season after season.
-
“You wouldn’t seal your house!”
No additional sealer is needed. The combination of MDO plywood, thorough priming, and multiple coats of quality exterior paint provides all the protection your barn quilt needs for years of outdoor display — just like the exterior paint on your home.
-
Barn quilts are designed for years and years of outdoor display. The materials and process are chosen specifically with longevity in mind — from the billboard-grade plywood base to the multiple coats of exterior paint on every surface. Like most items, it will last longer if you bring it in over winter, but it can be displayed year-round.
Hanging Your Art
-
Wright Side of the Barn does not offer hanging services, but we're happy to provide guidance so you can hang your barn quilt confidently and securely on your own.
-
If your barn quilt arrived with hanging hardware already attached, please note that this hardware was added for display purposes only and is not necessarily a recommended permanent hanging method.
Before installing permanently, take time to consider your unique display situation — the surface material, exposure to wind, and the size and weight of your quilt — and choose a hanging method that suits your specific needs.
-
French cleats are the most elegant and reliable solution for permanently hanging a barn quilt. They distribute weight evenly, allow for easy leveling, and keep the quilt flush against the wall.
French cleats can be purchased ready-made or easily built from wood at home.
